Are medical costs the leading cause of U.S. bankruptcies?

The 60 Second Science Blog, from Scientific American, reports:

"Analyzing data from 2,314 randomly selected 2007 (pre-mortgage-meltdown) bankruptcy filings revealed that most of those who had claimed bankruptcy because of medical expenses had health insurance, owned homes, were in their mid-40s and had middle class incomes. "

Healthcare and the New Intelligence

The volume, variety and velocity of data in healthcare is a very good example of where our world needs "new intelligence." Such a new infrastructure would help us better manage and process medical records to lower the cost and increase the quality of healthcare, put more research and genetic data to work and shift from a system that treats disease to one that prevents and manages it.  Check out this video for an entertaining overview of what we mean by new intelligence.

Health 2.0 Blog, Facebook Group & Wiki

One of my new year's resolutions is to cross-fertilize the myriad professional interests I've accrued in almost four years with IBM, including virtual worlds and 3D technologies, social computing and Web 2.0 trends, and of course, healthcare innovation via new technologies, models and practices.

So I hope I'm not wildly late in pointing folks to the very timely and important new initiative by Matthew Holt and Indu Subaiya, the Health 2.0 blog, Facebook group and wiki.

Here's an excerpt from the launch post in November, 2007:

"Welcome to The Health2.0 Blog

Since the Health 2.0 conference in September, the blogosphere has exploded with hundreds of blog posts from people all over the country and world. Among the myriad thought-provoking pieces on Health 2.0 have been contributions by Esther Dyson at the Huffington Post, David Kibbe,  Brian Klepper and Jane Sarasohn Kahn defining Health2.0, Amy Tenderich on DiabetesMine, Scott Shreeve on healthcare FICO scores, and many, many more. There’s been posts in lots of countries and several languages. Plus the opening video has been reposted and commented on in several places (usually with great compliments, but not always!)

Given the bits and pieces of interesting conversation on the Facebook group, the Health2.0 wiki, THCB and more, we decided to create a forum for our diverse and emerging community to convene and deepen the conversation. So with great fanfare…."

I hope I can encourage my IBM colleagues involved in both healthcare and related fronts of networked collaboration efforts to become part of this critical conversation. And will definitely strive to focus HealthNex in 2008 in this direction.

It's quite amazing how fast new fronts like this emerge...it was only a year ago that John Sharp of eHealth had taken the initiative to produce an eSession for HIMSS 2007 on Web 2.0 implications for healthcare. I was so swamped with 2.0-related work that my own contribution to the presentation was meager.

In any event, congrats to Matthew and Indu, and in the spirit of leveraging mass collaboration, I hope that all interested in this front will contribute to the blog, join the FB group and be part of what should become a true innovation movement.

The first-ever conference on Healthcare Blogging will be on December 11, 2006.  The Medical Blog Network has an event lineup and list of current speakers. The conference will take place in Washington D.C. and hopes to show attendees the benefits of healthcare blogging and social media.

Update on Tristan da Cunha

More good news on the telemedicine connection with Tristan da Cunha (for background see my previous post)!  We have established partners, who are going to help us in the various stages of this project.  UPMC is going to develop the connection via the Internet with Tristan da Cunha.  MedWeb, which already links to Djibouti and some other very remote locations, is also assisting IBM in developing the tools, technology, and equipment necessary for the connection.

When this connection is established Dr. Joerg Jaschinski of Tristan will be able to send digital X-ray, EKG, and the like over the Internet and get real time specialist consultation.  Besides establishing the link, we plan to set up two servers for the system in case one crashes so that images can be transmitted and UPMC contacted at any time.

Northstar Global, an international banking firm, is joining the project as well by donating the money, with help from their partners, necessary to give the island the necessary technology. 

IBM and Dr. Jaschinski thank all the partners involved in this project.  Dr. Jaschinshi wants to “…thank all the people involved warmly from the Tristan community…”
